The turn of the century Japanese street singer figure in the center of this card is taken from this book – Voyage d'une Suissesse Autour du Monde (The Voyage of a Swiss Woman Around the World) by Cécile de Rodt, published in 1904. It's one of my favorites, as all the little pink tabs would attest.
The author traveled around the world, writing and taking photographs – alone. Can you imagine what that must have been like at that time? I am full of admiration for her courage. It's a large book 8.25" x 11.5" (21cm x 29 cm) and 708 pages, full of interesting photos and anecdotes.
The tag, which I printed from the computer, says 'Happy Birthday' in Japanese.
