What to see in Rennes, France

My husband and I are back from a week's exploration in Northern France. The first part of the week we were in the Brittany and Normandy regions, then spent the way back weekend in Paris. I've lived in France for almost fourteen years now, but I have never visited these regions.  We based ourselves in Rennes.

Rennes is in Brittany (Bretagne in French). The historic center of the town still has many of the old medieval and Renaissance half-timbered homes.

Notice how one level extends at times over another and how they are most definitely not straight (just in case you were wondering if I held the camera properly or had had a bit too much cider—more on that later). 

Some street signs are written in both French and Breton (more in common with Gaelic than French).
