I'm a sucker for kitchen gadgets and am always on the lookout for something that can make my time spent in the kitchen easier. Admittedly, some gadgets are duds, but some perform so well you wonder how you ever got by without them. Voici...a recent gadget acquisition, this tofu press. Do you need a tofu press? I suppose the answer to that depends on whether or not you eat tofu, but if you do, then I'd say 'YES!'
If you're a tofu novice, let me explain. Tofu is packed in water and to prepare tofu you need to first remove the water. Just taking the tofu from the package and wiping it off doesn't do it. You have to press that water out. You can do this by wrapping a tofu block in cheesecloth or toweling and placing a heavy weight on it (e.g. a cast iron skillet, plate with cans, etc.) and let it sit for a bit.
Or you can use a tofu press.
After decades of preparing tofu without a dedicated press (thinking I didn't really need it), I decided to treat myself to one and am so glad I did. It's easier and more secure than the pan method and I feel like it does a better job of wringing out the water. Gadget success; €14 well spent.
Wow I have never heard of such a thing! Must tell my sister...
